Ceremony Elements 11: Overcoming Obstacles

Writer: Nick WellsNick Wells

This is a powerful ceremony with couples who want to demonstrate their commitment to tackling life's challenges together. The Overcoming Obstacles ceremony is particularly meaningful because it's not just symbolic for the individuals - it requires actual teamwork right there in the ceremony.

Whether the couple choose to saw through a log together, cut a ribbon, or break through another material, this ceremony creates a memorable moment that often brings both laughter and deep meaning to the celebration. It's an element which shows that marriage isn't just about the romantic moments - it's about working together when facing obstacles.

Couples can decorate the obstacle however they wish. For example, if sawing a log, the would can be decorated with words representing challenges the couple might face - perhaps "communication," "trust," or "patience." Some couples use a beautiful ribbon tied in complex knots, each representing different obstacles they've already overcome together. Creative couples might use a series of linked paper chains, each chain representing a challenge they've faced during their relationship.

What makes this ceremony extra special is that the guests get to witness the couple's teamwork in action. There's can be a wonderful energy as everyone cheers the couple on.

You can even chose to saw through something from the family property (with permission of course).

All of these ceremony elements can be beautifully woven into a wedding day, and as your celebrant, I'm here to help you choose and personalise the ones that best reflect your relationship. I’d love to hear from you.
