A Wedding Celebrant? What’s One of Them?

When it comes to weddings, there are a lot of decisions to make, from the venue and the dress to the flowers and the food - or even whether to have flowers or food.

One important choice, that some people don't even see as a choice, is who will officiate your wedding ceremony. Many couples go for a traditional religious officiant, such as a priest or vicar, but there is another option that is gaining popularity: a wedding celebrant.

As I've been introducing myself at social events recently, I've been finding people asking what it is that a wedding celebrant does. So, I thought I'd weave together my various answers into a blog post, explaining what a wedding celebrant does, and why you might choose one for your big day?

Celebrants come from all kinds of backgrounds, but aren’t generally cats - though this might be popular.

Celebrants come from all kinds of different backgrounds - some may have experience in fields like counselling, education, media or event planning, while others may have a flair for public speaking or a passion for storytelling. Whatever their background, they should have a commitment to making each couple's wedding ceremony unique and unforgettable. If you are considering a celebrant, it is worth asking them about their training and their experience of writing and public speaking.

Unlike a religious officiant, a celebrant is not affiliated with any particular church or religion. Instead, they are focused on creating a personalized, meaningful ceremony that reflects the beliefs, values, and personalities of the couple getting married.

In the most recent UK census (2021) there were some significant changes in religious affiliation in England and Wales. Only 46.2% of the population (27.5 million people) identified as Christian - down from 59.3% in 2011.

Meanwhile, those identifying as having "No religion" increased significantly to 37.2% of the population (22.2 million), up from 25.2% in 2011, making this the second largest group. This is likely why so many more people are now choosing to have non-religious ceremonies.

Having a celebrant is like being the cat that got the cream.

The benefits of having a wedding celebrant

There are several reasons why you might consider hiring a wedding celebrant to officiate your ceremony.

Personalisation:

One of the biggest advantages of working with a celebrant is the ability to completely customise your wedding ceremony. Rather than following a strict religious script, you can work closely with your celebrant to craft a ceremony that reflects your love story, your beliefs, and your personal style. This could include incorporating meaningful readings, rituals, or traditions that are important to you as a couple.

With a celebrant led ceremony, you can do you and express yourself however you want.

Inclusive and accessible:

Because celebrants are not tied to any specific religious affiliation, their ceremonies tend to be more inclusive and accessible for couples of all backgrounds and beliefs.

Whether you're looking for a secular ceremony or one that incorporates multi-faith or non-religious elements, a celebrant can help you create something that feels authentic and meaningful to you.

Expertise and guidance:

Experienced celebrants have developed skills in the art of public speaking, ceremony design, and wedding logistics. They can offer invaluable guidance and support throughout the planning process, helping you navigate tricky decisions, manage the timeline of your ceremony, and ensure that everything runs smoothly on the big day.

Flexibility and convenience:

Celebrants are generally more flexible than religious officiants when it comes to scheduling, location, and ceremony structure. This can be especially helpful for couples who are getting married in non-traditional venues or who want to incorporate unique elements into their ceremony.

Being a celebrant requires flexibility and a zest for life.

Finding the right celebrant for your wedding:

If you've decided you want to work with a wedding celebrant, the next step is to start your search. Look for celebrants in your local area with whom you can build a great rapport, who specialises in the type of ceremony you're envisioning, who communicates well in writing and in speech.

Ultimately, the right celebrant for you will be someone who listens to your vision, offers thoughtful guidance and suggestions, and helps you to create a wedding ceremony that is a true reflection of your love and commitment to one another.
